Carroll University launches new volunteer center
WAUKESHA, Wis. – Carroll University has launched its new on-campus Volunteer Center, just one part of Carroll's cross-campus initiative aimed at increasing volunteering, service learning and community outreach.
"Carroll is encouraging volunteering as a key component of the university experience, allowing students to connect to the community, learn outside the classroom environment, and develop the desire to serve throughout their time at Carroll and beyond," said Dean of Students Dr. Theresa Barry.
On a recent day, 67 student volunteers signed up to work at one of three area sites:
• Hadfield Elementary School, 733 Linden St., Waukesha: 24 students worked several hours trimming trees and branches encroaching on a playground, moving wood chips and mulch to improve playground safety, sprucing up flower beds and working on a project in the school library. Said Hadfield Principal Stacy McCoy, "I know these sound like somewhat mundane things, but they really do help us. With budget cutbacks over the years, we all have taken on more roles for students, which means we have less time for some of the other things that still need to get done."
• The Women's Center, 505 N. East Ave., Waukesha: 25 students cleaned transitional living apartments in preparation for new tenants, moved furniture and worked on landscaping projects.
• Waukesha Family YMCA, 320 E. Broadway, Waukesha; 18 students worked with kindergarten through fourth-grade students in an after-school program.
The Volunteer Center is organized and run by Tony Boehm, an AmeriCorps/VISTA staff member who will spend a year on assignment at Carroll. The center will be a clearinghouse for volunteer activities – a place where students can find volunteer opportunities and community organizations can find volunteers. It is designed to make Carroll a more integral part of the community. For information, contact Boehm at aboehm@carrollu.edu.
